Swiss Livin 05/22/14

Yesterday we had one of the first relaxing days in a while. When we woke up our agenda only consisted of a few things including laundry, the new Olympic museum, and the most important one on the list Professor Ryan’s birthday. The day stared out with a very casual timetable beginning with the usual breakfast downstairs. Following that most of the group headed back to the rooms to gather whatever dirty laundry needed to be done. The Laundromat only consisted of around six washers and only a few dryers so the group had to work together to get all our laundry done. Soon after washing our clothing we realized that in order to avoid too much laundry traffic the Laundromat made the dryers timed to only last four minutes each cycle so the process took much longer then expected. After finally finishing washing our clothing most of us decided to head for a lunch spot that several of us had gone before. It was a simple burger stand but they made the most delicious burgers and of course I got a double hoping it would fill me up. After lunch some of us went to the Olympic research center to begin investigating our topic for our final paper, we all ended up meeting in front of the Olympic Museum where we had a tour scheduled for two o’clock. The museum was brand new; it was previously on a ship right in front of the current museum where they brought in most of the important items and had a restaurant on the top of the ship. The museum was an amazing place to see. The Museum was a great experience divided up into four different sections each level revisits an essential aspect of the modern Olympic movement, from its origins to the heart of competition. Some of my favorite highlights being a former runner were seeing Jesse Owens running shoe. I also enjoyed viewing the dream team of the 92 games signed basketball and former USA hockey player James Craig, and even Rafael Nadal’s shoes from his gold medal performance in the 2008 Beijing games. Another one of my favorite things to see at the museum was seeing the large display of all the various Olympic mascots from all the past games. It was interesting seeing the wide range of ideas they came up with from the many different nations who have previously hosted the games. After finishing up with the museum we checked out the gift shop and the headed back to the hotel to get ready for professor Ryan's fondue birthday dinner. We got there an weren’t really sure what to order so we decided to go with what they recommended including a three different types of cheeses but was a little disappointed with the lack of substance as we only received bread and potatoes to dip in the fondue. Overall the dinner was great, and at the end we gave Professor Ryan his birthday gift which was a fully equip Swiss army knife after we found out he got his taken a way when he left it in his carry on. We concluded the night with a short walk in the rain to the metro and finally turned it in to rest up for another adventure in Switzerland.
