Big Day!

Yesterday was probably one of the most important days of the entire trip. The first event was a visit to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters. It was there that we got an opportunity of  a lifetime, meeting with Timo Lumme, the director of marketing for the IOC. He only speaks with 4 university groups and for Syracuse to be one of them is a huge honor. He talked to us about what he does on a daily basis: sit in meetings, sign billion dollar contracts, attend events and often eats 6 meals a day with very important people. The fact that he took the time out of his day to talk to the 10 of us was awesome. After he rushed off to a meeting, we were given a presentation from his staff in the Television and Marketing Services, who handle many of the Olympic sponsorships, such as the deals with Coca-Cola and Dow Chemical. They talked about the process of finding sponsors, what they look for in potential companies, and the company's rights with the Olympics. They also handle the broadcasting side of the Olympics, which is a large task considering that there are hundreds of television channels around the world who want to show the Olympics on their own TV networks. One of the most interesting aspects of the presentation was when they discussed The Olympic Partners (TOP) program. There are currently 10 TOP partners who receive the largest benefits and highest price tag. A few of these companies include Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Samsung, and Panasonic. It was really interesting to hear about especially because the presenters are responsible for and work first hand with the multi-billion dollar companies. The entire time spent at the IOC was a very eye-opening experience and it just made me want to be a part of the Olympic Games some day. Just a note for all those wondering, when Professor Ryan said the word "Rio", Mr. Lumme replied "Rio will be great. Don't listen to the press".

After the IOC, we walked over to the Olympic Studies Center. It was there that we got a a tour of the library and saw their huge collection of Olympic books and historical archives. It was crazy to see the creator of the modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin's personal journal and a letter in which he drew the first picture of the Olympic Rings.

To finish off the day, the group all went to the Plage de Vida. This was a little hidden beach where we picnicked and grilled up some sausages and hamburgers. The best part waas that it provided an incredible view of the Alps from across the lake. We could even see France on the other side! Lausanne is hands-down one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been. I am so thankful that we have another 2 and a half days here to enjoy it because I know that I will be missing Switzerland.
